Where the fuck should I go?
It happens to us every weekend (or for those of you in the service industry, nightly). You call your friends and ask, where the fuck are we going tonight? The response is always mixed. Somone wants to just chill, someone wants to find ladies, someone just wants to go out and just get plastered. The next question is, Mill Ave. or Old Town Scottsdale? As much as there is to do around the Phoenix metro area, these two areas attract the nightlife. I'm here to write to you about what places are great for each type of situation in both areas.
Let's start with Mill Ave. (or the surrounding area).
For the friend that wants to chill tonight:
Casey Moore's is a perfect neighborhood hangout. It's located off of Mill and can be found on 9th St. and Ash. It used to be called 9th and Ash, and even had a song written about it by Jimmy Eat World. The vibe at this place exudes chill. Belly up at the bar or sit at one of the various tables outside. Face it, we live in Arizona, enjoy the weather! Grab a cold beer or a stiff drink, just don't order something fruity. Beer or straight booze! Your best bet for the night is a cold Guinness or one of their various Irish beers on tap. Don't worry about it being chill for too long though, because after a few beers that sad sack of a friend will want to do a shot. Get him a Jameson and try and coax him to your next mission.
For the friend that wants to find ladies:
There is always the single friend who needs to go out "trolling" or whatever they call it these days. I've always known it as "fishing." There are a couple places to find a friend for the night on Mill. You have to make sure the dancing is at full effect wherever you go and there are a bevy of beautiful women just getting drunk, ready to make bad decisions. That brings you to one conclusion....you're going to Zuma Grill. It's known around as the "Scottsdale-type" club in Tempe. I've never really gotten that, but I can see it. Everyone dresses to impress and is looking for someone to take home. The line is sometimes a little long, but who cares! You want the ladies don't you??? Go up to the bar, grab a drink (not a beer), something like a vodka & soda or whiskey & coke. It looks a lot better that way. Get a couple Zuma bombers and start working the crowd. By then, people are cramped like sardines so it's easy to meet someone and strike up a conversation (just make sure you don't say something douchey or frat boyish). Make your way to the dance floor and let loose with the new hottie you just met. You never know what happens after that! Have fun and wrap it up!
For the friend that wants to just get plain ol shitfaced:
Really, any bar you go to on Mill you can get shitfaced to your preference. But where can you find somewhere that has all 3 attributes you are looking for? Let's see, when getting drunk usually it leads to wanting to meet people, maybe dance, take shots, and let loose. Only one place comes to mind....The Tavern on Mill. Everyone that goes there has the same mentality. You want to get drunk, stupid, make bad decisions, and just have fun. There is always a line that is long as hell so plan accordingly. Once you do get in, get down to brass tacks....order a beer and a shot. The bar is busy so don't order anything too stupid. Keep it simple, my usual is a Corona and shot of tequila. It gets the job done, always. The beats are always pumping, the bodies are always shaking, and the booze is always flowing. A night at the Tavern has it's consequences, such as Coyote Ugly Arm, excessive hangovers, and the always present "leaving your credit card at the bar" moment when rifiling through your wallet in the morning. If you do get there early, make sure Jaime or JT are working and order one of my signature shots...The Running Naked. The ingredients are on my profile to look it up. Get crazy but not enough to get thrown out! They do it on a nightly basis....damn drunk bastards!
Alright that's it for Mill....those are my recommendations for each situation that might arise on a Friday or Saturday night. Let me know your favorite places to go/hang out in these situations on Mill too. I'll be posting my Scottsdale recommendations very soon so keep an eye out for my next blog. Thanks for reading.
Your drunken companion,
Corbin
